Summer 2026 – The Ownership Update

Summer 2026 – The Ownership Update

Message from the CEO

Back to It and More Energized Than Ever

It has been a busy summer. Between preparing for the conference, and building new partnerships with organizations committed to expanding employee ownership, the EOC team has been anything but quiet.

We have been meeting with advisors, business owners, and sector partners from coast to coast, finding more ways to reach the people who need to hear about employee ownership at exactly the right moment in their journey. Those conversations have reminded us, again, of how much this community has to offer; and how much demand there is for what we are building together.

As many of you go on vacations and we move closer to a new school year, here is what is coming: more webinars this fall, new resources going up on the website, and we are actively working to make select resources available in French so we can better serve business owners and advisors across francophone communities Canada-wide.

We are also welcoming so many new members to this community, many of whom will be joining us at the conference for the first time. We have been building new partnerships with organizations across the country that share our commitment to keeping Canadian businesses Canadian-owned, and we are always looking for more ways to reach owners and advisors where they are.

This issue also brings the news many of you have been waiting for: a robust speaker lineup and the full agenda for our conference in October. We are thrilled with what is taking shape in Vancouver. Whether you are coming for the tax and legal sessions, the economic big picture, or the peer conversations with employee-owned companies, there is something in this program for you.

As always, there is a place for your voice in this community. Thank you to the volunteers, speakers, sponsors, and partners who have given so generously of their time and expertise this summer. We would not be here without you.

We look forward to seeing you in Vancouver on October 20.

Warmly,
Justine Janssen
Chief Executive Officer (Interim),

Thank You: July Webinar Recap

On July 22, we hosted Exit Options for Selling Owners, a practical session designed to give business owners a clear-eyed look at the full landscape of succession paths. Joanna Phillips (Rewrite Capital Advisors) and Kira Gregson (Sequeira Partners) walked through five exit options side by side, Employee Ownership Trusts, Employee Share Ownership Plans, management buyouts, private equity, and strategic acquisitions; covering timelines, deal structures, due diligence, and what the post-sale experience typically looks like for the owner.

The session drew on the reality that there is no shortage of options for selling owners, but understanding what each one actually means in practice for your timeline, your team, and your payout, is not always straightforward. If you missed it, the recording is available below.

Selling your business to an Employee Ownership Trust is one thing. Understanding what running that business looks like the day after is another. How does control shift to the trust? Who makes decisions? How does employee voice factor in, and how are financials communicated to staff?

Jennifer Williams, Founder of Ownership Design Group, has advised businesses through and after EOT transitions and serves as a trustee advisor for EOT-owned companies. She will walk through the governance and operational realities of an EOT-owned company; the things most owners wish they had understood before signing. Live Q&A included.

June 2026 ~ The Ownership Update Newsletter

Message from our CEO

Since the EOT $10 million capital gains tax exemption became permanent, we have seen something shift. More business owners are asking questions. More advisors are leaning in. The conversation about employee ownership is reaching people it has not reached before, and that is exactly what we have been working toward.

The 2026 Canadian Employee Ownership Conference is where that momentum comes together in person. It is your best opportunity to learn from experts, connect with employee-owned companies, and be part of a community that is building a more prosperous and equitable future.

This month, we are excited to share the first of our conference speaker announcements; including voices that will bring both economic rigour and real-world leadership to the room. We are continuing to finalize the agenda and programming to make this year’s gathering as valuable and memorable as possible, and we will keep sharing updates in the newsletter and on our website as things come together.

To those who have shared this newsletter, spread the word about the conference, and signed on as sponsors or speakers: thank you. This community is tight-knit and growing at the same time, and we do not take that for granted. The volunteers who have given their time and expertise to help us build resources and share accurate, useful information have made an enormous difference.

As the school year wraps up and summer begins, we know many of you are heading into well-earned time off. We hope this issue gives you everything you need before you go.

Keynote Speakers Announced: 2026 Canadian Employee Ownership Conference

We have been sitting on this news, and we are thrilled to finally share it: three headline speakers have been confirmed for the 2026 Canadian Employee Ownership Conference, October 20–22 at the Pinnacle Harbourfront Hotel in Vancouver, BC.

The Hon. Christy Clark: Day 2 Dinner Keynote (Sponsored by Bennett Jones)

We are proud to welcome the Hon. Christy Clark as our Day 2 dinner keynote speaker. Canada’s longest-serving female premier, Christy Clark spent more than 30 years in public service and is recognized as one of the country’s most dynamic political leaders. As Premier of British Columbia from 2011 to 2017, she oversaw six consecutive balanced budgets, the lowest unemployment rate in Canada, and landmark investments in childcare, Indigenous partnerships, and job creation. Today, she advises at Bennett Jones and speaks internationally on Canadian infrastructure, trade, natural resource development, and political leadership.

Her keynote will bring a big-picture perspective on what it takes to build an economy that works for everyone; a conversation that feels especially relevant now, as employee ownership moves from the margins to the mainstream.

Kevin Milligan: Economic Update

Economist Kevin Milligan will join us to frame the broader economic context for business leaders: with all the change of the last few years, where does Canada stand, and where are we going?

Kevin is Professor of Economics at the Vancouver School of Economics at the University of British Columbia, Scholar-in-Residence at the C.D. Howe Institute, and Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He has served as Co-Editor of the Canadian Tax Journal since 2011 and was Special Advisor on Economic Recovery in the Privy Council Office of the Government of Canada in 2020–21. His research spans public and labour economics, with a deep focus on how the Canadian tax and transfer system shapes decisions and well-being.

Few people are better positioned to explain the current Canadian economy, and to answer questions about where employee ownership fits in.

Senator Tony Loffreda: Opening Remarks

We are delighted to welcome back Senator Tony Loffreda, one of employee ownership’s longest-standing champions in the Senate of Canada. Senator Loffreda represents the Shawinegan division of Quebec and was appointed to the Senate in 2019. A former Royal Bank of Canada executive and Certified Public Accountant, he has been a consistent and vocal advocate for Employee Ownership Trusts, calling for the capital gains tax exemption as far back as 2021 and writing publicly about its potential to transform Canadian business succession.

Senator Loffreda will join us again this year to frame the conference and celebrate the momentum behind employee ownership in Canada, including the landmark policy win that defined 2026.

The full agenda and speaker lineup are coming soon. Register now at employee-ownership.ca/conference.

A Message from the CEO

A New Chapter. A Historic Win.

After years of sustained advocacy, coordinated engagement with policymakers, and a growing chorus of voices across the country, the federal government has made the Employee Ownership Trust capital gains tax exemption permanent.

This is a landmark win. It is the kind of policy change that opens doors for business owners who want to exit on their terms, for employees who deserve a stake in the companies they have helped build, and for communities that benefit when Canadian businesses stay Canadian-owned. None of this happened by accident. This achievement belongs to the many leaders, advisors, business owners, partners, and advocates who have contributed to this work over the years.

To those who pushed our conversations with government forward, who lent their names and their networks to letters and campaigns, who showed up to roundtables and hearings and webinars, and who have helped spread the word about why employee ownership matters for Canada: thank you.

We know this is not the end of your involvement. We know you will continue to work alongside us to educate business owners, to build the ecosystem, and to make employee ownership a truly mainstream option for Canadian companies at every stage of their journey.

You will see the work on our website, resources, and other assets grow and adapt over the coming months to fully reflect this landmark news. We are updating our materials, refining our messaging, and building new tools to help advisors and owners take advantage of this permanent incentive with confidence.

The permanence of the capital gains tax exemption on business sales to Employee Ownership Trusts changes everything about the conversation with owners and advisors. It removes the uncertainty that was the single biggest barrier to adoption. Now we get to focus on growth.

Warmly,

Justine Janssen

EOC Community Voices

“Canada’s next chapter of growth starts with investing at home.”

~ The Hon. Francois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue

These words, spoken as part of the Spring Economic Update announcement, speak directly to the spirit of employee ownership. When Canadians invest in each other, in their colleagues, their communities, and the businesses they have helped build, the result is an economy that is stronger, more resilient, and more inclusive.

The permanence of the EOT tax exemption is a direct expression of that vision. It is a policy designed to keep Canadian businesses in Canadian hands, and to ensure the wealth that workers help create stays in the communities where they live and work.

Stories, insights, and action from Canada’s employee ownership community.

Message from the CEO

Advocacy in Action. A Movement Gaining Strength.

Over the past several months, we have seen what is possible when this community comes together with clarity, urgency, and purpose.

Our advocacy efforts have reached new heights. Through direct engagement with policymakers, coordinated letters from business leaders and partners, and a strong national media push, we have elevated the conversation around employee ownership and its critical role in building a prosperous Canada. Together, we have made a compelling case for why making the EOT tax incentive permanent is not just good policy, but a critical step toward strengthening our domestic economy.

This progress would not have been possible without you. We are deeply grateful to the leaders, owners, advisors, and advocates who lent their voices, shared their stories, and mobilized their networks to support this effort. In a complex and often crowded policy landscape, your leadership helped ensure this issue was heard.

We remain hopeful that the incentive will become permanent as a result of our collective effort, and are focused on building the tools, partnerships, and awareness needed to make employee ownership a mainstream pathway for business succession in Canada.

As we continue to focus on growth of employee ownership in Canada and on delivering value to our members, I am excited to welcome Natasha Goldstein to our team as Head of Operations and Partnerships. Natasha will lead membership strategy and day-to-day operations. I know this community will continue to grow and thrive with her leadership, and I look forward to supporting the organization in new ways as we carry this work forward.

Thank you for being part of this movement.

Advocacy in Action: A National Effort to Advance Employee Ownership
Over the past several months, we have seen a remarkable level of engagement, leadership, and collective action across the employee ownership community. Together, we have elevated this issue in meaningful ways and made a strong, unified case for why employee ownership must be part of Canada’s economic future.

Progress on Policy: Bill C-15

Recent updates passed under Bill C-15 have introduced important changes that improve access to employee ownership structures for business owners, enabling a greater number of businesses held in personal holding companies to qualify for the tax incentive. These changes were informed in part by the work of Employee Ownership Canada’s Expert Advisory Committee, whose coordinated efforts helped shape more practical and accessible pathways for sellers. This is a meaningful step forward and a clear example of how expert input and sustained advocacy can influence policy.

Business Leader Letter: A Powerful Signal to Government

We were proud to mobilize 32 prominent Canadian business leaders who stepped forward to publicly call on the federal government to strengthen employee ownership in Canada by making the capital gains tax exemption permanent.

This was more than a letter. It was a clear and coordinated signal from respected leaders across sectors who put their names, their organizations, and their networks behind this issue. They did not just sign. They led. They shared, amplified, and activated their communities to ensure this message reached policymakers and Canadians alike.

We extend particular thanks to champions including Darryl White (BMO), Douglas Ndegwa (Spartan Controls), and Geoff Smith (EllisDon Inc.), who played a critical role in engaging peers and expanding the reach of this effort. Their leadership helped transform this initiative into a national call to action.

National Open Letter: Canadians Stepping Forward
We also invited Canadians from across the country to lend their voices through a public open letter, and the response was immediate and powerful.

We surpassed our initial goal within days and this message resonated far beyond the business community. Employees, owners, and individuals new to employee ownership quickly recognized its potential to address succession challenges, strengthen local economies, and create more inclusive wealth.

Sector Collaboration

We came together with the Canadian Worker Co-operative Federation and Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada, to represent a broad and diverse ecosystem of employee-owned businesses, co-operatives, and the advisors who support them.

Together, we urged the federal government to act. Together, we reinforced that employee ownership is not a niche solution, but a national opportunity.

This collaboration reflects something bigger than any one organization. It represents a shared commitment across the sector to build a stronger, more inclusive Canadian economy.

Government Engagement
Over the past month, we had productive meetings with MPs, Senators, senior political staff and civil servants from the Department of Finance. This included a trip to Ottawa led by EOC board members Tiara Letourneau, Chad Friesen, and Mike Fotheringham.

In addition to these meetings, we have submitted formal recommendations ahead of the Spring Economic Statement and are continuing to advocate for the permanence of the EOT tax incentive as a practical, low-cost policy that supports Canadian ownership, productivity, and long-term economic resilience.

Our submission outlines a clear and urgent reality: without near-term policy certainty, new EOT activity risks slowing significantly, despite growing interest from business owners across the country. It also provides a practical path forward to stabilize the market and unlock broader adoption of employee ownership in Canada.

Featured Stories & Media Highlights

A National Media Moment for Employee Ownership

Our recent efforts urging the government to make the Employee Ownership Trust capital gains tax exemption permanent did not just reach policymakers. We reached Canadians across the country.

Through a coordinated media push, we successfully elevated employee ownership into mainstream national conversations. The tone was clear, urgent, and forward-looking. These stories positioned Employee Ownership Trusts as a practical, common-sense solution for Canada’s economic future, leaving many readers with a simple conclusion: this works, and it matters now.

The results were significant:

    • A Canadian Press story syndicated across 25 publications, spanning print, digital, and radio
    • CBC coverage and video features shared nationally, with additional reach through Yahoo News and Yahoo UK
    • Increased engagement from journalists, many of whom were introduced to EOTs for the first time
    • Growing inbound interest from business owners exploring employee ownership as a viable succession path

This was more than media coverage. It was a big boost in awareness.

We are incredibly grateful to the advisors, business owners, and employee-owners who stepped forward to share their stories and insights. Your voices brought credibility, urgency, and real-world perspective to this moment.

These stories below highlight the real-world impact of employee ownership and the leaders driving this movement forward.

EOC Community Voices

“Have we ever faced more of a sovereignty crisis than we are right now? … Again, as we talk about a productivity crisis in this country, it’s because we don’t invest enough in our businesses. Here, [with employee ownership trusts] there’s enough time for long-term investments to pay off. So more investment [in our businesses] happens.”

This is a quote from Jon Shell, Chair of Social Capital Partners and Board Member of the EOC on the Moolala: Money Made Simple Podcast with Bruce Sellery. Together they discuss why the EOT structure has been so successful in jurisdictions like the US and UK, and why governments tend to support this structure as a win-win for everyone.

“The reason why governments tend to support this in the US in the UK and then again here in Canada is because it’s such a broad-based outcome for the workers. Everyone gets to participate in ownership.”

Message from the ED

A Growing Movement, Stronger Every Month

As we move into 2026, the momentum behind employee ownership in Canada continues to build, and this past month has been a powerful example of what this community can achieve together.

We’ve been deeply active on the advocacy front, meeting with policymakers and developing practical templates and tools to support business owners, advisors, and partners as we collectively work toward making the EOT tax incentive permanent. At the same time, we were thrilled to host our very first webinar, Employee Ownership 101, and to see such strong engagement and thoughtful questions from across the country.

We’re also expanding how we show up: at conferences, in policy conversations, and through new resources designed to help people learn, decide, and take action on employee ownership. Whether you’re interested in sharing your expertise through an article or webinar, helping us raise awareness, or contributing to our research and advocacy efforts, there are more ways than ever to get involved.

Thank you for being part of this growing movement, and for helping strengthen Canadian businesses, communities, and wealth for the long term.

Warmly,
Justine Janssen
Executive Director, Employee Ownership Canada

FEATURE: Grantbook’s EOT Success Story: Protecting Mission While Passing the Torch

As employee ownership gains momentum in Canada, more founders are looking to EOTs to solve a familiar challenge: how to step back without sacrificing culture, mission, or fairness. For many, traditional exits raise fears of cultural drift, fragmented teams, or ownership concentrated in the hands of a few. Grantbook’s story shows how an EOT can offer a different path.

Grantbook co-founder Peter Dietz began exploring ownership options years before EOTs were on the Canadian policy agenda. A share purchase plan was the first attempt, but it quickly showed its limits. As Dietz reflects, “If we had done more of the share purchase plan, we wouldn’t have a buyer because the employee base didn’t have the cash available or interest necessarily in taking that risk.”

Management buyouts and third-party sales also felt misaligned with Grantbook’s collaborative, mission-driven culture. The EOT model offered something different: a way to make every employee a beneficiary, avoid financial barriers, and preserve the company’s “DNA.” The transition required careful governance design, outside expertise, and a clear explanation of what “ownership” would and wouldn’t mean in practice.

Looking back, Dietz credits the EOT model with making a values-aligned exit possible: “The elegance of the EOT model allowed me to exit freely, because without it I don’t know if I would have been able to complete the transaction.”

EOC Community Voices

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a message that strongly resonates with our shared call to keep businesses rooted in Canada:

“It means building what we claim to believe in, rather than waiting for the old order to be restored. It means creating institutions and agreements that function as described. And it means reducing the leverage that enables coercion – that’s building a strong domestic economy. It should be every government’s immediate priority.”

This call to strengthen Canada’s domestic economy mirrors exactly what employee ownership makes possible: keeping wealth local, empowering workers, and addressing the coming succession crisis in a way that reinforces both economic resilience and sovereignty.
